Train travel in Europe can be one of the most rewarding ways to move between cities, but a smooth trip depends on preparation. The biggest mistake first-time travelers make is assuming every train works the same way across every country. In reality, reservation rules, baggage policies, and station layouts vary a lot between operators.

Start by planning the route before you compare prices. Look at the total journey time, number of connections, and the size of the transfer window. A cheap ticket with a seven-minute platform change in an unfamiliar station can be far riskier than a slightly more expensive direct train.

Always check whether your train requires a seat reservation. High-speed and international routes often do, while regional trains usually do not. If reservations are mandatory, book them as soon as your travel dates are fixed, especially on popular summer routes linking France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.

On the day of departure, arrive at the station earlier than you think you need. Large European hubs such as Milano Centrale, Paris Gare de Lyon, Wien Hauptbahnhof, or Zürich HB can take longer to navigate than small airports, especially when platforms are announced late.

Pack for mobility. One suitcase you can lift alone is better than two heavy bags when you need to board quickly, climb stairs, or walk between platforms. Keep passports, tickets, chargers, and a refillable water bottle in a small day bag so you do not need to open your main luggage during a transfer.

Finally, build a backup plan for delays. Save the next possible departure, know whether your ticket is tied to a specific train, and take screenshots of platform details in case signal disappears underground. The calmer and more informed you are, the more enjoyable European rail travel becomes.
